When I got the diagnosis that my then five-year-old daughter had “pervasive developmental disorder,” I was devastated. As a psychologist I understood that this term was under the category of autism—a disability of life-long impact. As other possible diagnoses presented themselves over the years, the pressure to “fix” her became impossible. If you are a parent of a special needs child, you know that this diagnosis is the beginning of years filled with tests, medications, and new therapies ... sending your hopes on a roller coaster of ups and downs. My daughter lives in a world that is too loud, too fast-paced, and too overwhelming for her. “Can you just … love her?” is our story. I share how God guided me and continues to hold me as we navigate our course through troubled waters. If you are struggling to understand why your child is going through this, or you are trying to cope with all the “normal” children around you, this book can help you find your way. God’s presence in the midst of a topsy-turvy life—which few can comprehend—is very real, calming and hope-filled. God has trained me to expect good things no matter what they look like to my natural eyes. As I communicate His truths to Kelsi in her panic-filled thoughts in the moment, or Kelsi hears God speak to her directly, she calms down. Always. Nothing freaks God out, and nothing separates me, Kelsi or anyone else from His love.

I felt like I was reading Kathi's personal journal while reading this book. I probably was. Kathi recounts so many detailed stories of living life with Kelsi. The spiritual lessons she learned have value for all of us. And Kathi weaves them in with such grace. I can't recommend this more!Product details

Can You Just Love Her? A Mother Journey With Autism A Memoir Kathi Basehore 9780998956008 Books Reviews
Wow! Such a great read...this writer draws you in from the start as she bares her heart and soul. It is beautifully written, enjoyable and practical. Whether you are a parent of an autistic child or know someone who is, this book will be worth its weight in gold. I also enjoyed watching the author's spiritual story unfold and found myself relating to her remarkable journey.
I appreciated Kathi's honest, moving account of her healing journey as she shares about dealing with issues in her personal life and coming to know and hear God in deeper ways. She intertwines her story with the story of her daughter Kelsi and living with the challenges of autism. Kathi provides hope as she tells how their relationship has grown and been strengthened through the years. She gives helpful understandings related to living with a child with challenges and provides helpful resources for parents.
I read this book in 2 days. I was so captivated by Kathi's struggle, the perseverance and eventually her trust that she learned to develop through God; something I struggle with and long for.
I admire her vulnerability to share her story. I could relate to codependent behaviors, trust issues, anger, childhood trauma but I am fortunate to have a "normal child". As I read this book I had such empathy for her and her husband, for I will never understand truly of that hardship. While reading this book it gave me the insight on how hard it is and how trust in God truly does prevail. I lespecially loved her faith and continuous love for her child , but mostly, her new found peace and comfort within herself. Another goal I am trying to obtain. A Must Read. Blessings!
I was stunned when reading this book about caring for a special needs person and how much it was likened to my life with an alcoholic son. He started drinking when he was 15, and is now 41 and still trying to overcome.
I have no doubt that I will be using this book as a reference to help my relationship with my son, but also with God.
A truly inspirational read with wonderful incite on recognizing our emotions and how to handle them. Wonderfully crafted.
Thank you, Kathi for haring your thoughts and life with us. You ar a blessing!
What an awesome book. The story of raising an autistic child was very touching and inspirational. Related to parenting or any family issues, I would think this book should be on the top of the reading list for everyone. I am not a parent, just a person who wants everything to be perfect and everyone to be happy and get along. My life was much more stressful a week or two ago then I read Kathi’s book. The book made me realize how much pressure we all put on ourselves in trying to fix things that are not fixable or are not made to be fixed. Thanks to Kathi's book, I try to understand the negative issue(s) in my life or those around me. I have opened my eyes and ears to guidance which I have received in the past, just did not realize it. Now I learn from those non-fixable negatives which are now positives. I just feel like I am more productive and more at ease. Thank you Kathi for helping me make me a better person. Thank you God for giving us Kathi and Kelsie and for pushing Kathi to tell their story so they can help us.
Great book! Clearly written, easy to follow - so glad I bought this! I can pass it onto other people who need hope in difficult situations.
I found myself quickly going from chapter to chapter. This book offers great insight into the world of living with a child (and then a young adult) on the autistic spectrum. I could sense the pain of the diagnosis and the joy of hearing from The Father himself! I especially liked the interview with Kelsi at the end of the book. I'm thinking this book will help many who are struggling with their child who is different. You will be blessed by the hope in this book.
