Weredragons, men call them. Monsters. Cursed ones. People who can turn into beastly reptiles.
In an ancient world just rising from darkness, they are everywhere. Some wander the plains with clans of mammoth hunters. Others are born in riverside huts. Some live across the ocean where seafaring tribes are discovering the secrets of bronze and writing in clay. Everywhere their curse is the same--people who can grow wings, breathe fire, and take flight as dragons.
And everywhere, they are hunted. They hide in forests and caves, dispersed. Many are alone, unaware that others exist. They are shunned, afraid, dying . . . until a group of these lost souls binds together and stands tall.
A blacksmith in a world of stone tools. A mammoth hunter exiled from her tribe. A traveling juggler and a wandering warrior. An elderly druid and an outcast prince. They are weredragons. They are cursed and hunted. Together they will forge a new tribe, a home for their kind. A dawn of dragons rises. The nation of Requiem is born.

A compelling and interesting read. I am a long time fan of dragons, so I've been enjoying reading through Arenson's books. This is a great origin story for the Virgin Requis, and for Requiem! The descriptions of things are very well written, and make it to where I can easily picture things in my mind. It can be a bit too... Sadistic at times, and I feel like he overused the whole "demons impregnating women" thing too much, but that's neither here nor there. And he seems to really like using the word "sneered" a lot, even when it doesn't really fit the scene as a whole. But, overall, it was a quick, interesting read, and I will definitely be reading the rest of the trilogy!Product details

Requiem Song Dawn of Dragons Book 1 Daniel Arenson 9781927601358 Books Reviews
While I did find the idea of weredragons appealing, and the plot pretty good, I did find the repetition of descriptions of people and places a bit tedious.
I did enjoy Laura's character arc as well as Jeid's. I found Meav to be one dimensional, but I have hope for her character growing in the upcoming books.
And now I am off to read Requiem's Hope.
I enjoyed the book very much, I usually read mostly Sci-fi, but I have a thing for dragons. Some of the demon acts and descriptions were kinda gross, make sure you have a strong stomach, but the writing is very creative. I probably would have given one more star, but I hate when a writer stops th e story at an exciting event to start the next book. Sorry!
The dragon war remains my favourite in the series and it's a hard act to follow.
With Requiem's Song Daniel is going back to the beginning and telling us the origin of our beloved race of dragons. It tells an exciting story of when humans first developed the ability to shift into dragons. It's a tale of prosecution and rebellion where our dragons are still alone.
For those who've followed this series, Requiem feels familiar yet refreshing. I don't envy Daniel as prequels have many restrictions that make it that much harder to surprise but I was captivated from cover to cover non the less.
If you are new to the series my only footnote is that Daniel does not introduce well established concepts and for good reason. I think especially the abyss which was well explored in the other trilogies may be a bit confusing though other then that Requiem's Song is an excellent book to get into the series.
I truly enjoyed reading Requiem's Song. Arenson creates realistic characters that we are drawn to. The story is so well written and descriptive that I could see in my mind a motion picture of everything I was reading. Like watching a movie of what I was reading as I was reading. It was that awesome for me. -) I love all the Requiem books ... ALL of Daniel Arenson's books. I highly recommend this book and the series.
I loved the Requiem series and this prequel to the series is a series in and of itself. I myself like the story lines even the disgusting parts, for out of fire and persecution come the rebellions that forge new life and light in the struggle to be free from the oppressive. Daniel Arenson has done a wonderful job with the characters lives and the feelings of the characters, their struggles to be free from what has happened to them. And also their fears that the horrors that they face may win, giving strength to the resolution that the fight is non-negotiable and that if they don't fight nothing will change and they will still be persecuted. Well done Daniel, kudos. On to the next book in the series.
This book is very graphic and sometimes made me uncomfortable with the descriptions of certain occasions. The author wrote very well and a little too descriptive for my taste. I bought the first 3 books and will read all 3 of them but am not sure if I will buy any more of this series as it is very graphic. I don't enjoy reading about demons as much as they are a part of the first two books but will continue to read to see what happens to the characters in the book. I hope the human/dragon personnel continue to win their battles and I like for good to triumph over evil. Time will tell. If you like a lot of action these are the books for you. I am impressed with the clarity of pictures described by the author and might look into other series written by him.
This story moves quickly and steadily, and author Arenson's key characters are engaging and likeable. I'm always up for a good dragon-centered plot line, so his fresh perspective on a species much-maligned and originating "in the stars" is most intriguing. I look forward to reading the next installment. (I'm hoping Book Two will reveal how the noble dragon race came to Earth.) The author has a gift for conveying emotion and invoking empathy, and the reader is drawn into the dragons' miserable plight.
That said, I would have appreciated fewer lengthy, blood-and-gore driven descriptions of the many grossly disgusting, villainous creatures of the piece. Those passages occurred frequently and often went on for pages. A little pus, vomit and feces goes a very long way, and once the first few initial depictions of vile beings has been presented, we don't need to read yet another long version many times over.
